BUYING A WEBCAM

Post by laulau »

Hi,
I intend to buy a webcam: the Foscam seems to suit my needs(external wifi).
How do i choose between FI8904W and FI8905W?
I followed the topic: https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=4346 ;but I still hesitate
Can anyone advise me?
P.S. what about changing his lens?

The most significant difference seems to be the field of view between the two. The FI8904W has a 42 or 56 degree angle (depending on the website you read) and the FI8905W has a 22 degree angle. The 8905W has a longer field in total darkness owing to a greater number of IR LEDs. (That may not matter to you if it is intended for weather viewing).

Cheers
Dave

I think the difference in specs for the FI8904W might be horizontal FOV versus diagonal. IMO you want a wide angle lens for a weather webcam. But if your view is limited by trees or whatever there would be little point in a wide angle camera. 22 degrees is like a telephoto lens on a photographic camera. Standard lens is about 60 degrees horizontally. I've just ordered a couple of cheap 110 degree colour surveillance cameras for our smallholding.

I found that FOV is field of view, but what does IMO mean ?
To have a wide angle webcam it's then better to get a FI8904W cam with a 3.6mm lens ?

OK TAYSQ* - I would tend to go for the wider angle one (of the two) myself but there may be other considerations - I haven't looked at the full specifications.
