I'm thinking of replacing my LaCrosse station with a Davis, but...
The main reason I didn't get a Davis originally was that they have all the sensors grouped in the same place. IE, if it's positioned for ideal temp/humidity recording, then the wind sensor is way too low, and if the wind sensor is at an ideal height, then the temp recording is about 5 or 6 times too high.
Do these stations have to have the sensors grouped together, or can they be 'split'?
Is there a way people overcome this problem? Or it just disregarded?
Thanks.

Depends which model you're talking about:

If it's the (lower cost) Vue then all of the sensors are inseparably in a single assembly. (Yes, you can buy a separate anemometer and transmitter for wind data, but that rather defeats the point of opting for the low-cost Vue model in the first place.)

If it's a VP2 station then then anemometer is physically a separate part from the temp/hum/rain sensors and can be mounted independently and as you wish. But note that the standard VP2 model only has one transmitter (in the main sensor assembly) and so the anemometer needs to be cabled back to this transmitter even when mounted elsewhere, unless you buy the additional anemometer transmitter for it.

The VP2 temp/hum/rain assembly is not designed to be easy to split into separate temp/hum and rain gauge, but with a little work and purchasing a couple of extra spare parts then it is not difficult to do so.

We do have a Vantage Vue and very happy about it. It is installed 6' above rooftop. Now the question is do we really get accurate reading ? I dont know and I guess the answer should be no as the temperature sensor is not in a vented box so many feet above ground, free of any interferences, etc like you see at the official weather sites. Same goes for the wind sensor.

That being said, I have been comparing our data with others around here including the offical gvt site and there's not much difference. So far the only time we do get discrepancies for temperature is during winter nights with no wind. Then I guess, the height of our pws is catching warmer temp strat. At dawn, the dif can be as high as 5C warmer. I can also tell you that for whatever reason, when there's a massive low pressure weather system, our temp data is dead on with the airport.

The wind data are tougher to compare as the landscape can influence wind speed quite a bit. But even that, we do check with another cheap wind sensor installed 20 feet above ground free of any interferences and we do get pretty much the same reading all the time including max gust speed.

Hope this help,

yvan

I have had a Vantage Vue for over a year now. I have been very impressed with it's operation. I send my data to the CWOP program which in turn sends it to MADIS which performs a quality control check with stations near me. I have included the link for my station so you can see how it performs. In my case it appears to be very accurate.
