Btw. Does anyone know how the best way to cut a Dia 130mm hole in Melamine would be?

Drill a hole on the edge using a glass drill - see picture, then carefully use a jigsaw with a fine blade. Rough edges can be smoothed with a file/sandpaper.

Thanks for the info Teg.

I will see how my painted trays fair, and if
need-be, then I will try melamine bowls.

I popped out this morning and put my stevenson screen onto
my weather station. After a bit of wobbling about on a ladder
I managed to slip it over the existing Fine Offset screen. I
then tied it off the the bracket arm with a piece of string,
as that was the only thing I had to use.

Now I am just a bit worried about if it will hold up in a
strong wind :| I wobbled it about and it does move
a bit, and hopefully the string will hold it on OK.

My main concern is the movement from side to side as if it
moves about too much could it snap the plastic arm bracket.

Has anyone else got a screen like this located about 2-3 meters up on a pole?
and how has it held up in a strong wind?

Below are some photo's I took of it installed.

As you can see in this picture above, I have tied the screen off the the
arm bracket with string through two holes I made in the bottom play tray.

The recommended height for the temperature and humidity unit is about 5ft off the ground. But if you don't want to extend the wind sensor cable then it's best to have it as low as possible. Not near a warm building or south facing wall which will raise the temperature reading though.

Oh, and the recommended height for the rain gauge is about 20" (45cm) above ground. See other threads.

Now I have my screen installed I have
been keeping an eye on how it has been performing
and what differences there are in the temperature readings.

I have two graph plots from AWEKAS that compare my
temperature readings with a calculated average from
surrounding stations.

1.
This image was taken before my screen was fitting
and as you can see at the left hand side of the graph.
My temperature readings were quite a bit higher in the afternoon.
Image

2.
This image was taken with the screen fitted and as you can see
the temperature readings now closely match the average.
So I can see that the screen has made a difference.
Image

The screen/transmitter is still currently located on my 3meter pole, and I am going
to move it to the side of my shed (which is north facing so will be in the shad), and
to the correct height of the ground. So I hope that this will get my readings even
closer to the average :)

Impressive. Got to be happy with those results.

The improvements would be much more evident in the summer when the sun is stronger. The 'shield' which is suppied with the Fine Offset is almost useless as it actually touches the sensor. You must be feeling chuffed now.

Yes I am very happy that its made such a significant
difference.

I hope that moving it down onto the side of the shed
does not have a detrimental effect on it.

I would of kept it mounted where it is, but I think that
with one good gust of wind it may break the arm. So
moving it to the side of the shed will at least keep it
out of the wind.

Guess only time will tell, so I will keep my eyes on
the readings once I have it re-located.

That is just great results.

I did not think moving my temperature sensor down to the proper height would make a difference in the temperature but it did. I think more so on cool nights.

I have spent this morning re positioning my transmitter
(with stevenson screen) and my rain guage.

While I had my pole down to take them both off, I measured the
exitings cable length which is connected to the wind guages
and the overall length is 2800mm.

Which ment that I did not have to join them to a longer
extension cable. (even tho I have bought two 10m cables).
I may resite the rain guage to another position off the shed
at some other time. So I will be able to use the extension
cables then.

Also now with the transmitter in it's new position it means
that I will be able to change the batteries easier as it is
at body height now.

As you can see from the photo's below the transmitter
is now almost 100% in the shade (as my garden is South Facing),
so it should help further to get more accurate readings.
(the shed is sheilded by a fence at the back and to the right,
so hopefully it will not heat up too much and radiate heat).
As the sun is mostly shining at the fence on the rear most of the day.
Then in late afternoon it moves to the fence on the right.

I also made sure that the fan worked and got enough light when
it was in its final position. And it was spinning around like a good 'un.

Before I re-seated the stevenson screen, I decided to drill a few ventilation
holes in the middle three trays so that the fan could suck up any heat
that was trapped between the trays, so will keep and eye on my
temperature readings to see if they make any difference.

Now the rain guage is off the pole this should help with stopping
the wind shaking the pole and giving false rain readings. But now I have to
make sure no one bangs the shed. My other half has already been warned LOL ;)

Orion,

Any chance of a couple of photos of your screen when it's finshed ;)

Also, can I ask by which method you found to cut the large holes in the melamine bowls?
