The Davis VP2 console can run on batteries so even though the power is down when it returns Cumulus will download the stored data on the logger.

If you're reading this Steve then you're back on line and hopefully without damage to your property. Thinking of you. Can't imagine what a 90mph wind feels like.

I suspect he is going to be out of power for days.

Although this surprises me because I remember asking him about severe winds such as this a long time ago and he said that where he lives it is used to such things.

Another question: Will Cumulus be able to graph the data and display it online for us to view?

I'd be surprised if he wasn't back on by tomorrow lunchtime. It is a very exposed area and they are used to this kind of weather every winter. Not sure how severe this storm was compared to others but with some areas near sea-level getting 100mph+ gusts it's quite a bad one.

Providing his console batteries last and he's not without power for many days then yes, you will be able to see the data once he's back online.

I doubt it. The sun sets around 3.30pm so the peak of the storm occured after dark.

Saw this on the 6pm news in New Zealand. They said that gusts had reached 265 kph somewhere! Wherever it was, it must be very high up and exposed I would say...

And the picture of the burning wind turbine was pretty interesting

It was at the summit of Caingorm. Not many people live up there. Down at ground level the highest gusts appear to be around 103mph (165 kph). The media always run sensational headlines.

We're back! The peak gust was only slightly higher, at 90 mph. My highest 1-minute average is showing as 88 mph (Hurricane Force 12), but this may be an inflated value due to the way that the speed is calculated from the logger data (insufficient data points to do a true average).

Currently a sedate Force 7, gusting to 54 mph, with occasional horizontal snow showers.

Yes, we've escaped damage. We actually went out at its height to do something about a storage bunker whose lid was flapping against a window; that was seriously scary.


Just a 1 mph increase on the peak gust record. The average speed record was smashed but that value isn't really valid so I will remove it.

Still waiting for my highest gust to be broken. I only managed a puny 42mph. Here in south Manchester we're still getting heavy rain and hail showers off the Irish Sea. A frost is promised for tonight but I'm guessing you might escape that.

Steve: How did you sleep through 90 mph gusts?

Were you able to determine at all what your average winds were? I think you mentioned that the 88 mph number was faulty and you deleted it.

How about your wind run? Surely there has to be a record there?

Finally, you mentioned debris flying by your window. What kind of debris?
