Hi All,

I've been trying put together a new website today. Mainly due to having swapped from an older version of Dreamweaver to Serif Webplus x5 and not being able to find a way to import my website into Webplus?? As such I can't do the monthly admin to update the stats..

Anyway I have put together a very basic home page to test out inserting webtags but I can not get Cumulus to upload the test webpage. I know I must be doing something wrong, trying to learn Serif at the same time is probably not helping. I've been looking through the Wiki and FAQs and have done some searching here but still can't figure out how to fix this.

If I could insert the indexT.htm page/template into a 'box' on the new home page, or just upload a home page with a link to the old home page, that would fix things for now. Actually that is if I knew how to coax Serif Webplus into placing the new pages into the copy of my website on the PC!

Any help very welcome!

'putting the Cumulus web pages into a box' is otherwise know as using a 'in-line frame'. Take a look at this...http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_iframe.asp

Thanks. I'll have a quick read and see if I can get that to work. If I can sort out some links on a temporary home page to go with it I should almost have a solution that'll last me until I can get a little more time.

Anyone know much about Serif? I'd like to get it to import at least some of my current, Dreamweaver built, pages, such as this one, so that I can update it tomorrow.

I've just found time to come back to this. I am getting no where. Does anyone have a simple solution to the problems I have:
(a) to get Serif to import my Dreamweaver produced website so I can edit it?
or
(b) to get Serif to actually produce a webpage that Cumulus can process tags in?

I'm going to continue trying to get this to work, but if I can't solve this today, I am too busy to look at it again for some time and I am of a mind to not waste more time on it and take the website down when I need to renew the hosting in August. The station is really for my interest primarily, sharing the data is a secondary concern. If I can get a temporary solution I'll leave the website ticking along until I can have a proper look in the future.

What exactly is the problem that you're having in creating a web page to use with Cumulus? Or are you looking for a tutorial on how to use Serif?

I'm not sure - I embed tags in the webpage but then can't get Cumulus to read it. I actually don't want to be re-creating the templates that I have there now, they are fine. The problems stems from the fact that I, naively, expected Serif to import my website (the copy that I built in Dreamweaver) and to be able to edit it in a basic sense until I learnt more about Serif. I don't seem to be able to do that, so I'm now looking for a work around to have the ability to just update the "past data" page for instance until I can rebuild the website in Serif if that is what is needed (I just don't have time for that right now).

To that end I was hoping to generate a basic home page in Serif, with Cumulus tags and some links to my other pages. I can't even get Serif to link as it appears to only want to identify pages with its own file extension.

Anyway my frustration is mainly driven by lack of time, I'm very busy right now. Probably best I just allow the website stats etc to go out of date until I can find the time to sort it out some time down the line.

What do you mean by "can't get Cumulus to read it?". You've added it to the files tab and ticked the 'process?' box etc, but it doesn't process it, or something else? It's very hard to offer any help with so little information.

I suspect it is the old problem with the 'packages' encoding the < > to &lt; &gt;

You need to the check the page 'source' in your editor - or notepad once you have created it to check for the angle brackets being encoded.

Steve (the Willington one ) why can you not post one of your template here (compress the template within a ZIP archive before attaching/uploading it with your reply) - this way one of us will be able to see what is happening or not happening.

By the way, can the Serif WebPlus editor import templates (pages) created with the Adobe Dreamweaver editor - I looked at the documentation for WebPlus X5 and only found information about importing Word and Open Office text documents - nothing about importing templates, such as those produced by the Adobe Dreamweaver editor.

You have to understand (and remember) that the Adobe Dreamweaver editor produces its own file format... The Serif WebPlus editor also produces its own file format... Cumulus prefers to read and process files in the standard HTML format...

Steve, for some times, I have been planning to start a new message thread where I would write about converting the 'standard' Cumulus HTM templates (pages) to the PHP format, where Cumulus would not need anymore to process individual web page templates, where Cumulus would have to process only one data template (web tags). I guess such a thread could/would be of some assistance to you...

I've just checked this and it looks as if you are spot on. So how do I prevent this happening? And is there a tired 'idiots guide' to getting Cumulus to upload a trial page such as the one attached?

I may just be getting somewhere, thanks to you both.

Steve, as Mark pointed out in a previous message, Adobe Dreamweaver is using the '&lt;' and the '&gt;' instead of (replacing) the '<' and the '>' around the web tags - when the template (page) is processed by Cumulus, the '&lt;' and the '&gt;' are simply ignored by Cumulus and treated as page coding.

Since I do not use Adobe Dreamweaver, I am not familiar with its default parameters. But I remember some writing that it was possible to modify the settings and prevent Adobe Dreamweaver from replacing the '<' and the '>' with their ASCII equivalents.

Looking at the 'index20.html' template, you should be able to import the template into the Serif WebPlus editor without problem ... unless the WebPlus editor does not import HTML templates, in which case I would be very annoyed...

An immediate solution would be to import the Dreamweaver produced templates into the WebPlus editor, and do two 'search-and-replace', one for '&lt;' and replace with '<' and the other one for '&gt;' and replace with '>'.

In Dreamweaver, ensure you are typing/pasting the tags in 'Code View' (html) Typing '<' and'>' in 'Design View' will display correctly at design time, but will be converted to '&lt;' and '&gt;' in the actual code which is ultimately saved.

Steve, I just had a look at the help manual for Dreamweaver. It appears that the automatic conversion from ASCII characters to their HTML equivalent (such as from '<' to '&lt;') can/could be deactivated - the the code rewriting preferences has to be modified:

1. Select Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Dreamweaver > Preferences (Macintosh)
2. Select Code Rewriting from the Category list on the left
3. Set any of the following options:
...
... Encode <, >, &, And " In Attribute Values Using &

I cannot confirm that this modification to the setting would prevent further conversions ... as I do not use Dreamweaver.
