does anyone know the answer to the following question:
What is the meteorological definition of (for recording purposes) 'a day of laying snow'.
I posted this question to the Met' office some 4-6 weeks ago and still no answer - you often hear references to 'snow laying on the ground for x numbers of days' but I can't find the actual definition.
I have applied one of the following:
1.) ground covered by more than 50% of snow - or more robustly
2.) ground coverage through which grass, etc are not visible.

many thanks

The UK Met Office definition is "a day with snow lying is one in which snow covers
one half or more of the ground of an open area representative of the
station at the morning climatological hour of observation (0900 GMT in
the United Kingdom)."

steve, many thanks for the answer, I was about there.
Did you know that answer of the top of your head or did you have some form of reference? Either way - thanks.

It's from the Observer's Handbook.
