notepad++ ver 6.2.1
open file - shows as ANSI
Encoding
Convert to UTF-8
File/Save As 'new name'
close notepad++
Open new file again in Notepad++ - says it is UTF-8

I presume that as this does not say with or without BOM then it is with BOM as the only other option is without BOM.
Does this help?

Presumably you have the;
Encoding / Code in UTF-8 radio button selected?

Curious, it is actually set to ANSI.
I have not had an issue when I use Notepad++ (but it is not my 'goto' editor which Bluefish & free) as I am normally opening an existing file and it seems to respect and save in whatever the source encoding was.

Have just checked, and if I close every file, close Notepad++ and reopen it, the encoding is ANSI.
Have just changed the default to UTF-8, closed and re-opened Notepad++ and the encoding is UTF-8.

So it may be an issue of it respecting the source doucument encoding. Therefore if you want to change the encoding or are unsure of the source encoding, I guess you need to check this and explictly change the encoding before saving if necessary.

I used to use NP++, but now I use Komodo Edit, but it is much slower to load so I still use NP++ for quick file edits if Komodo isn't running. However Komodo is much more satisfactory to use.

I have just set the default encoding for JavaScript in Komodo to be utf-8, that's all I need to do. Not sure about np++, but I don't have to do anything special there either iirc maybe I have set utf-8 to be the default in that program too - I can check later.

Remember that a utf-8 without a BOM is just an ANSI file unless it contains characters that are not supported by ansi.

Komodo edit looks quite good, I think I'll give it a try. Seems to be aimed more at programming than general text editing?

It is a bit Steve, you can upgrade to the full paid for Komodo IDE which is multi-user development environment, but that is OTT for me.

I really like the built-in intelligence, not just syntax high lighting (and it integrates JSLint or JSHint for JavaScript syntax/style checking) but object property awareness (which unfortunately does not work across modules), so all the usual 'jump to definition' etc are there as well as parameter hints.

A great feature is you can set all the parameters on a per file basis as well as globally.

I mainly use it for scripting languages JavaScript, PHP (it integrates with the PHP runtime too), PowerShell, CSS. I see Pascal is supported, but don't know how well.

The only downside for me is the program start-up time, so I tend to leave it running all the time.

AND, the 'projects' are good too, easy to switch between projects and reopen all the files you last had open in a project and close the current files (if you want).

Poorer imho is the 'file diff' feature - not very user friendly or feature rich.
