WU update: The Task was canceled
Running solidly from 24/4 there was a wunderground message once on 30/3 then one on 2/4 and then yesterday after 20:07 every attempted connect to WU gave the same message. On the console there were repeated "error looking up socket handle" messages.
I pressed <ctrl>C and it took some time to stop. I have restarted CMX but not the Pi and it appears to be all OK now.

Re: WU update: The Task was canceled
I think someone else had that same "error looking up socket handle" message, but it wasn't clear at the time that it was related to WU updates specifically. This may be a bug in Mono. OTOH it may be related to the threading in Cumulus. It presumably happens after an attempt to update WU times out. Are there any stack traces in the diags file? Are you using 'rapid fire'?

Re: WU update: The Task was canceled
It seems that "The task was canceled" usually indicates a timeout, so I suspect that you are not getting a response from WU. It can also mean that too many http tasks are queued; this might happen if the responses start taking more than 5 seconds. MX doesn't currently check whether there is already an update in progress before initiating a new one - I'll change it so it does that.

Looks like something their end, at 14:00 yesterday it stopped, with no action on my part. It had been refusing updates since Sunday 20:00

Re: WU update: The Task was canceled
I've been using CMX for a couple weeks now on my "CumulusPi". It's been working great, with the only issue being me accidentally starting CM1 on my windows machine. I need to reboot my VP2 as well as restarted CMX in order to recover from the boo boo.jpsc wrote:Looks like something their end, at 14:00 yesterday it stopped, with no action on my part. But I digress.
I just started getting a few of these messages (WU update: The Task was canceled) today. I wondered whether this was some issue with CMX or with Weather Underground. At this point I'm inclined to believe that it is some (hopefully transient) issue with Weather Underground.

I've had a couple of those today. Looks like WU being slow to respond; I'm having trouble getting WU to open in my browser.

Re: WU update: The Task was canceled
WU is possibly going into major revision. Its parent company, The Weather Channel, announced severe cutbacks reducing their staff by probably 1/3 and reorganizing their shows - including their major players like Al and Jeff. I would expect such actions to fall over onto Wunderground and its products. Hold onto your hats folks, it might be a wild one. PS. It took me many tries to even log onto the site and my two stations are not showing on the map. The only system that the one using Weather Smart talks to is Wunderground. WTH am I going to do with that one if they quit carrying the PWS. It sure is irritating.

I found a bit about no longer using Facebook for logons, but I can't find the actual page that the site keeps bogging down.

Re: WU update: The Task was canceled
I ran into this today. I have a watchdog on the Pi watching for various conditions and hadn't been looking for it previously. Stumbled onto after about 4 hours stuck in this mode - by looking at the WU site.
I'm going to suggest that at least part of the issue may be within CMX. That is based on just one experience which is hardly a pattern. After reading this thread, and monitoring a growing number of mono threads (336) and CPU usage, I tried a reboot. As far as I can see, after the reboot the WU updates are working normally, where prior to it they seemed to be failing with "WU update: The Task was canceled" consistently.
This is a fragment of the 2 sequential logs grepping for "WU"...
I also note a different pattern here when CMX appears to drop into the "WU update: The Task was canceled" mode. CMX does an excellent job of starting updates at the top of the minute - and my WU updates fire once per minute. However, once this mode started, the "WU" lines are 2 minutes apart. If I had to guess, I suspect there's a timeout at around 100 seconds, or 1:40 when the canceled message is issued. CMX likely starts the next attempt at the top of the minute (20 sec later) and then takes another 1:40 to fail (skipping one attempt in the process). In the log the stride between errors is 2 minutes, but between successes is 1 minute.
Looking back through the logs, grepping for "WU update" I note that there hadn't been a burp in about a week...
By the way ... Seems like, at least for my station, WU did something around 10 Jan that dramatically reduced the WU exception messages.
My Python watchdog already monitors Diags, so I'll add code to handle this case. Based on this single experience, it appears an unbroken string of "WU update: The Task was canceled" messages over 4 hours was cured by the Pi reboot (40 minutes and updates without a burp). If I'm ambitious enough, I may allow for some number of these in a row before I indicate that a reboot is needed. From what I read here, it seems there may be cases where it fixes itself.
Cheers,
Bob

Re: WU update: The Task was canceled
for the last 2-3 months WU had been affected by outages to the extent their fire extinguishers are empty. The Support team had no idea how to fix issues. they have now drafted in a team to try to fix all outstanding issues (there is tons of them
listed here: https://trello.com/b/hqC0tb0u/weather-underground
dont expect a quick fix by WU, they are also planning on upgrading their systems which no doubt will provide more bugs than features.

Re: WU update: The Task was canceled
Yeah Simon - I have read some of it, but hadn't seen the WU Trello board. I actually started digging into wxforum when I realized my webcam wasn't updating (and I posted a little to https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=33258). I was looking for WU alternatives. From the Trello board, webcams continue to be an issue.
I dug though some diags logs looking for other, untrapped (by my code) messages and found a few of these...
A little more than 1 / day on average. This appears to have the same timeout (1:40), and is similar in that regard. What is different is that the 15 of these I've accumulated over the past few weeks didn't stop WeatherCloud from carrying on. (As I result I hadn't noticed them.) I do see gaps in the plots when this occurs. Far less concerning than WU.
Cheers,
Bob
I found 2 other threads when looking about for messages like these... But not clear a new WeatherCloud thread would be helpful.
Interruption of data feed to Awekas
Website not updated
But I'll note that I found these unique WeatherCloud messages in my log since I started posting there (for completeness).

Re: WU update: The Task was canceled
From the diags log...
I think that's the recommended version (for Jessie). I've not tried Stretch yet
I may start a WeatherCloud thread for this, though this looks a lot like what I saw for WU. For the better part of 4 hours I haven't seen a "WeatherCloud Response: OK: 200" in my log. I've seen 1 "Response: OK: 429" and the other attempts are "The Task was canceled." So it will be interesting to see what effect a reboot/restart will have. ....
Well, next 3 attempts after reboot also failed according to the log - different from the WU issue (though it could be coincidence). (I did do a full Pi reboot.)
Interestingly, in spite of the logged cancelations, there are only small gaps in the WeatherCloud site. That different than the effect on WU data. Not sure what to make of it. One gap corresponds to the 429 in the log.

Re: WU update: The Task was canceled
OK ... I started a new thread, WeatherCloud update: The Task was canceled because I had some more observations I wanted to share.
Spoiler ... the timing seems to have changed a little as of this morning.
