New Fibre Broadband Issue: Cannot upload to website!

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

New Fibre Broadband Issue: Cannot upload to website!

Post by geoffw »

We have just had installed fibre into house with a new moden/ router and 10 times faster broadband. The down-side is, whenever I switch my laptop monitoring my weather station Cumulus will not upload data to my website. If I switch back to my BT router all is well.

I have till Monday next to find the reason and sort it.

Any suggestions of tweaks to the Cumulus MX settings I might try? I’m using Cumulus MX v 3.15.3 Build 3173

Unlikely to be a Cumulus issue - more likely to be a restriction elsewhere.

When you are using your fibre connection can you view your website from the laptop that you have Cumulus installed on?

Do you have a restriction on which IP addresses can upload to your web server? That could be a potential thing to check.

You could upgrade to the latest version and switch to the PHP upload mechanism. If there is a restriction on FTP then this change would side step any restriction.

You could also switch on data and debug logging while using your new router, and upload the resulting MXdiags log to the forum. That would be a sensible first step before trying anything else.

Bit more info that directs the issue away from Cumulus. I have just noticed my two webcams also stopped uploading.

Bit busy today but might have time this evening to update Cumulus to start with.

If I was you, I would try ftp/sftp/scp connection manually with filezilla, winscp or similar tool to your web hosting. If it also does not connect, then it is much easier to report the problem (and to get a reasonable response) than explaining that your "random open source weather software running in raspberry pi" does not connect. All that you have told so far suggests that for some reason your hosting company is blocking access from your new fibre connection's ip address range.

did all your devices have static/reserved IP addresses on your old BT router? I suspect your new one is handling out any free ip to any device thus breaking connectivity to "known" ip addresses.

Good catch also. Especially this will cause problems with you had static ip addresses and the new router uses a different subnet by default (eg 192.168.0.x vs 192.168.1.x).

I think each device would "present" to the web server with the internet connection's public IP address. Any private LAN IP addresses will be hidden behind NAT/CGNAT.

(Unless using an ISP-provided IPv6 prefix - but that's only worth looking at it if actually used)

Are you saying that on the old router it is Ok and on the new router it is corrupted as I very much doubt that since the router would have no interaction with the file.

Who is providing the FTP (Fibre To Premises) connection i.e. what supplier.

Sorry I wasn't clear in my reply.

On the BT Modem all is fine, but when I switch to the router attached to the fibre ONT (Optical Network Terminal unit) Cumulus acts up. the Dashboard goes to zero and the "data stopped" warning light at the bottom comes on.

I have just checked - FileZilla is working fine so manual FTP is fine.

Sorry to be obstinate but you didn't answer my question, who is the Supplier. Once we know that we may be able to offer an insight into how their router works via their website or experience!!

It sound to me like the BT router handed out fixed IP addresses via DHCP and the new router is handing out totally different IP addresses via DHCP, maybe a totally different range of addresses, hence the question.
