Time lapse using P&S digital camera

Post by toadstone »

Since moving to our current location (just over 1 year) I've noticed some really dramatic weather phenomena. Capturing such events can be frustrating, let alone forecasting when they might happen.

One such event is where conditions exist that produce a small standing cloud at the head of the valley. For about no more than an hour the cloud forms at its leading edge and just disappears at the other end, its shape and form changing all the time but it remains static in space. This is one I must try to capture!!!

One I have caught is the formation of ground mist coming in off the Cheshire Plain which fills the valley both sides of our position. As the sun starts to rise the temperature rises and "forces" back the mist bank. The following link shows what happens. http://www.biglow.co.uk/weather/php/tlmist.php I used a standard Point & Shoot Canon Digital camera (2nd hand off ebay) and used the CHDK to allow timed image capture. The resultant images were processed in Quicktime. You will need to have the Quicktime plugin for your chosen browser to view the movie. The final movie is just over one minute but consists of nearly 800 images taken over 3.5 hours.
